Client Story: A Lesson in Hope

At Catholic Charities, we invite every client to complete a brief survey at the end of their appointment. These
surveys help us better understand the challenges our clients face, how they experience our services, and how we
can continue to grow in compassion and care. One recent response stood out—a powerful reminder of the
impact a simple act of kindness can have during a time of need.

Meet “Tiffany.” (Name has been changed to protect client privacy)

My name is Tiffany, and I was only 22 years old when my first daughter was born. When she was just six months old, I made the decision to go back to school. I juggled classes while tutoring and babysitting on the side, and her dad was earning just a little more than minimum wage at the time. We relied on public assistance for groceries and medical care, and honestly, we needed every bit of help we could get.

When our daughter was about to turn three, we wanted so badly to make Christmas special for her. She was at that magical age where everything feels exciting and full of wonder. But after covering necessities, there was very little left for anything extra, let alone gifts.

That’s when I reached out to Catholic Charities.

From the very first phone call, I was met with kindness, compassion, and understanding. I remember how comfortable they made me feel right away, and how relieved I was that I had called. They asked me to create a wish list for my daughter, including her clothing and shoe sizes, and assured me they would do what they could.

The day I went to pick everything up, I was completely overwhelmed. The generosity was beyond anything I expected. There were adorable outfits, a warm coat, hat, gloves, and so many age-appropriate toys and little surprises. It wasn’t just about the gifts—it was about feeling seen, supported, and cared for during a very difficult season of our lives.

Today, I have two daughters, now grown at 22 and 17. I earned my degree in Education and have been teaching for the past 18 years. Giving back is something my family and I do every chance we get.

We will forever be grateful to Catholic Charities for making our daughter’s third Christmas so memorable and magical—a gift we have never forgotten.

Her words remind us that every person who walks through our doors carries more than just paperwork or past-
due notices. They carry hopes, fears, and a deep desire to build something better for themselves and their
families. And with every compassionate conversation, we walk alongside them—one step at a time.
