Habitat for Humanity Collaboration
“Rebecca” and her husband “Eric” had been precariously housed; couch surfing since relocating from out of state a few months ago. They had been hopeful of building a stable life after moving, as both Rebecca and Eric were able to find employment and they were starting to save money for a rental property. Unfortunately, Rebecca had to stop working due to an extensive arm surgery and filed for SSDI, as she would not be able to return to work. In addition to Rebecca’s loss of income, the factory Eric had been working at was going to be shut down for few months with no clear indication as to when they would start production again. Eric, being one of the newer employees, was one of the first to be laid off. Knowing the family and friends they were trying to bounce between could only make this situation work for so long, the couple was starting to lose hope.
Luckily, Eric was able to find a new job quickly and again began to save for a place of their own. After finding a place they had just enough saved up to pay for the deposit and rent, but nothing of their own to fill their new home with. It was at this time that Rebecca heard about an emergency furniture program at Catholic Charities, in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity of East Central Ohio. After meeting with their caseworker at Catholic Charities, they were provided with Hope Restored vouchers, to allow them to purchase their own furniture and household items at the Habitat for Humanity Restore. Minutes after walking out of her appointment Rebecca walked back into her caseworker’s office, where with tears in her eyes, asked for a hug and expressed how grateful she was to have somewhere comfortable to sit while she healed from surgery.
After obtaining the keys to their new apartment, and shopping at the Restore, Rebecca, overcome with gratitude called into Catholic Charities and left her caseworker the following voicemail:
“I just wanted to again thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. I sat on my couch today and enjoyed it, and it’s been so long since we’ve had one. After my surgery and being able to put my arm up now, I just can’t thank you enough. God bless you… I got a table and chairs, and a reclining chair, and a couch that reclines and pots and pans and just little odds and ends and pictures. Everything I needed and more. I just can’t thank you enough for making me smile, and my husband. It felt good to shop. It feels good inside. I’m just so thankful. God bless you and your family.”
