Annual Bishop’s Appeal

 In News

Bishop David Bonnar is asking for everyone’s help with this year’s Annual Bishop’s Appeal.  Bishop Bonnar is continuing the practice of the appeal because he knows from his seminary training and 32 years as a priest that “the needs of the Church are always greater than our own.”

Consider the needs of the “Davis” family.

A couple with two children called Catholic Charities for mortgage assistance.  “Jim,” the husband was laid off in late spring, due to the pandemic, and the couple had fallen four months behind on their house payments.   Catholic Charities was able to access CARES Act dollars to bring the couple up to date on their mortgage.  “Jim” was called back to work in January, and the family does not anticipate needing further assistance.

In 2020, Catholic Charities assisted over 23,000 people and provided $1.7 million to clients in pass through and direct assistance funds.

Catholic Charities is one of the ministries your appeal dollars supports.  In addition to raising money to assist those in need, the Annual Appeal supports our Catholic Schools, Religious Education Programs and many other ministries which “ultimately benefit our students, families and our communities at large.  These funds have also enhanced our parishes and other essential programs that benefit so many,” Bishop Bonnar said.

The $4.0 million goal for the 2021 Annual Bishop’s Appeal has been established with the work of the Church and of serving others at the forefront of our minds.  While the current pandemic might have affected the needs of our community, the needs of our friends and family and possibly your own livelihoods or circumstances; one thing remains, to “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Mark 12:31)

“Given the pressing needs, your gift is all the more urgent.  Please give according to your circumstances…Your continued prayers and financial support help us to continue to respond to that first appeal given by Jesus, namely, to love our neighbor especially those in most need,” Bishop Bonnar said.

The Annual Bishop’s Appeal will be announced in parishes throughout the Diocese the weekend of February 20 and 21, with commitment weekend being celebrated the following weekend, February 27 and 28.  The Appeal will continue throughout the Lenten and Easter Seasons, concluding on Pentecost Sunday, May 23.
